Prince William playfully joked with Kate Middleton about her outfit at a royal engagement

Kate Middleton Prince William

  • Prince William and Kate Middleton are traditionally poised and polite at public engagements, but this week they showed off their playful side.
  • Middleton recently stepped out wearing pants and a blazer, deviating a bit from her classic dresses and skirt suits.
  • Her husband playfully joked about her outfit, telling the crowd that she blended in with a Christmas tree as they posed for photos.

Even though Prince William and Kate Middleton are traditionally poised and polite during public engagements, fans love when they go a little bit off-script, trading light jokes at each other's expense.

On Wednesday, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge went to a military base in Cyprus to meet with service men and women who will be stationed away from home during the holiday season, posing for photos and chatting with troops.

As they prepared to take a festive photo in front of a Christmas tree, Prince William took the opportunity to tease his wife about her outfit, an ensemble of dress pants and a blazer that looks like something Meghan Markle might wear.

Before posing together, Prince William pointed towards Middleton and asked: "Do you want me to get out of the photo?" — seemingly joking about the fact that the troops may prefer a solo shot of themselves with Middleton.

Then, of her fitted green blazer, he joked, "My wife's camouflaged against the tree," both comments eliciting laughter from the crowd and Middleton herself.

According to People magazine, Middleton also playfully teased her husband about one of his "nightmare habits" at the same event, a moment that wasn't caught on camera. In front of the military families and reporters, Prince William reportedly spotted some bright yellow couches, joking with the men to "keep the pizza off the sofas!"

The duchess reportedly responded by saying, "You're a nightmare with that!"

8 things you should never do right after having sex

sex kissing couple

  • Doctors say you should go to the bathroom and avoid putting on tight-fitting lingerie or underwear right after having sex.
  • Getting into a hot tub or a very hot bath immediately after sex can put you at risk for contracting an infection.
  • It's important to discuss sexual health before sex.

In the first moments immediately after having sex, there's a good chance you're reveling in the postcoital flood of hormones that make you feel sleepy and relaxed.

But even if you're feeling tired, there are several things you should be doing — and not doing — right after sex to help keep your body as healthy as possible.

INSIDER spoke with three OB-GYNs about what you should avoid doing immediately after having sex.

You shouldn't forget to use the bathroom.

It might not feel super sexy to immediately step away from your partner to use the bathroom, but emptying your bladder post-sex is actually pretty important, especially if you have a vagina. Dr. Allison Hill and Dr. Yvonne Bohn, OB-GYNs at Los Angeles Obstetricians and Gynecologists, said it's crucial because sexual activity can push bacteria up the urethra, which can lead to bladder infections or urinary tract infections.

"It is a good idea to empty your bladder after sex, because the activity is known to help bacteria transfer from back to front, from the anal area to the vaginal/urethra. Using the bathroom flushes out the area, lowering the risk of infection," said Dr. Carolyn DeLucia, an OB-GYN and adviser to Remedy Review.

Feel free to take a bath or shower — but try to avoid bathing in super-hot water.

All three experts agreed that taking a bath or a shower after sex is fine, but you might want to skip a post-sex soak in the hot tub, especially if you have a vagina.

Page said that excessive water exposure can "reduce the efficiency of your skin's antimicrobial barrier," upping your risk of contracting an infection.

Don't use perfumed or scented products on your genital area.

While there's no shortage of scented soaps, gels, washes, lotions, and other products marketed for genital health, these products can irritate internal and external skin and should be avoided after sex, especially for those with a vagina.

As Hill and Bohn previously told INSIDER, "We don't recommend using soaps or products with lots of added fragrance/chemicals, as they can alter your good, normal bacteria; ideally, you should wash just with warm water. Using anything foreign, such as [a] toy, gels, creams, and lubricants can disrupt your delicate flora, causing bad bacteria or yeast to overgrow."

Keeping your post-sex cleansing routine as simple and gentle as possible is the best way to ensure you're not irritating the genital area with harsh scents or chemicals.

Bella Hadid showed support for Halsey after the singer criticized the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show

halsey bella hadid

  • Last month, L Brands' (the parent company of Victoria's Secret) chief marketing officer Ed Razek caused controversy when he commented on the fact that the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show has never cast women with different body types or transgender models.
  • One of the performers in the show, Halsey, issued a statement on Sunday night as the show aired, criticizing Victoria's Secret for its lack of inclusivity.
  • Bella Hadid, who has walked in the show for the past three years, showed her support for Halsey's statement on Instagram.

As the 2018 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show aired on ABC, one of the show's performers, Halsey, criticized the show for its "lack of inclusivity" in a statement to her Instagram page, particularly towards the LGBTQ+ community. Her statement came after Ed Razek, the chief marketing officer of L Brands (the parent company of Victoria's Secret) made controversial comments to Vogue in November, in which he discussed why the brand has never cast women with different body types or transgender model to walk in the show.

Razek ignited controversy when he told the magazine: "Shouldn't you have transsexuals in the show? No. No, I don't think we should. Well, why not? Because the show is a fantasy. It's a 42-minute entertainment special. That's what it is."

Though his comments were made after the 2018 show was filmed and he later apologized, Halsey addressed her support for the LGBT+ community during Sunday night's televised special, noting that she "simply can't ignore" the comments.

"As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I have no tolerance for a lack of inclusivity. Especially not one motivated by stereotype," she wrote, adding that she had made a donation to the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) in support of LGBTQ+ youth.

Shortly thereafter, Bella Hadid, a model who has walked in the show for the past three years, shared Halsey's post to her Instagram story, tagging her and including a heart emoji. Hadid is the first Victoria's Secret model to address Halsey's statement but did not reveal whether she would continue to support the brand or walk in future shows.

Halsey then shared a behind-the-scenes shot on Instagram of herself with Hadid backstage as they posed for a selfie, captioning the photo, "Bella's world and we're all just living in it," congratulating Hadid on walking in the show and adding, "you deserve it the most."

According to Teen Vogue, Victoria's Secret models Karlie Kloss, Lily Aldridge, and Kendall Jenner responded to Razek's remarks about transgender models on their Instagram stories last month, with Kloss and Aldridge writing, "Trans and GNC people are not a debate." Jenner reportedly posted a photo of a pin that says "celebrate trans women" to her Instagram story.

INSIDER has reached out to Victoria's Secret to comment on Halsey's statement but has not immediately heard back.

Wedding festivities began with a welcome dinner in Mumbai on November 26.

According to the Hindustan Times, the couple began the celebrations with a welcome dinner for family and friends on Monday. Then, on Wednesday, they had a family puja — a traditional Hindu prayer ritual — at the Mumbai home of Dr. Madhu Chopra, Priyanka's mother.

Photographers snapped pictures of Chopra and Jonas, as well as Nick's brother Joe Jonas and his fiancée, "Game of Thrones" star Sophie Turner, entering Dr. Chopra's home in traditional Indian attire.

The couple had three traditional Hindu ceremonies, per accordance with Hindu customs.

The Christian ceremony took place on Saturday, with the Hindu ceremony on the following day.

The Hindu celebrations included the Sangeet, Mehendi ceremony, and Haldi ceremony.

The Sangeet, which took place on Friday, was a celebration featuring music and dancing and the joining of two families together, according to DNA India. Chopra and Jonas reportedly held the Sangeet in conjunction with the Mehendi, a traditional ceremony that involves applying henna to the bride in preparation for the wedding ceremony itself.

On Instagram, Chopra wrote of the dancing at the Sangeet, "And what a performance it was," Chopra, who wore Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla for the "fierce competition."

Chopra's cousin, Parineeti, echoed these sentiments on her own Instagram saying that the family had rehearsed their Bollywood-style piece for days. But, the Jonas family "stumped" them with their lip-syncing of Hindi songs.

According to the Hindu Times, the Haldi ceremony took place Friday. During this event, a paste made of turmeric, rose water (or water), and sandalwood powder is applied to the bride and groom's bodies to help rid the couple of evil forces ahead of their union, as well as encourage prosperity as they begin their lives together. It was followed by a cocktail party.

The couple married in a traditional Christian ceremony on Saturday.

Jonas' father officiated the first ceremony, and his brothers served as groomsmen. Chopra's closest friends made up the bridal party.

8 myths about having sex while on your period that you need to stop believing

pads tampons period

  • Even though period sex can be a perfectly normal experience, there are still a lot of stigmas and myths surrounding the act.
  • INSIDER spoke with an OB/GYN who debunked some of the common myths about period sex.
  • When having sex on your period you could still get pregnant and period sex isn't always as messy as you might think.

Even though it is definitely possible to have great sex while on your period, there are unfortunately a lot of shame-based stigmas and myths out there surrounding the act.

INSIDER spoke with Dr. Carolyn DeLucia, OB/GYN and advisor to Remedy Review, to break down some of the most misconceptions about period sex.

Here are eight common myths about period sex, debunked.

MYTH: There will be blood everywhere.

Period sex probably isn't as messy as you'd think, said Dr. DeLucia.

"Depending on the flow, it may not be messy at all," she said. "If your flow is at its heaviest, simply put a towel down on the bed or whatever surface you may be using and have tissues ready for clean up afterward."

If you'd prefer to wait until you're at the end of your cycle when your flow is lightest, you likely won't even need to worry about much blood at all.

MYTH: You can't get pregnant during period sex.

If you are having unprotected sex, you could be putting yourself at risk for pregnancy at any point in your cycle, especially because cycles can be irregular. "Always be careful having sex," Dr. DeLucia told INSIDER. "Our cycles change and we can ovulate sooner than expected."

According to WebMD, sperm can live inside a body for up to five days, and if your cycle is irregular, you could ovulate within that time — which means even though it's unlikely, you could get pregnant during period sex.

MYTH: Period blood cannot pass STIs.

Another reason to always use protection: "Any blood and bodily fluids can pass on STIs," said Dr. DeLucia, so if you or your partner is infected, you could unwittingly be passing on that infection. Safety and STI prevention should be a priority at every point in your cycle.

12 subtle warning signs of body dysmorphia

warning signs of body dysmorphia

Body dysmorphia is more than feeling insecure about your appearance. Most people have things about their appearance they feel insecure about or wish they could change, and it's totally normal to have days where you're not thrilled with what you see in the mirror.

But if you find yourself obsessing over your appearance, honing in on what you believe are flaws or things that need to be "fixed," you might be suffering from body dysmorphic disorder.

Commonly known as body dysmorphia, or BDD, this a mental health issue that is often misunderstood and rarely discussed. That's largely because in a culture filled with selfies on social media and a barrage of products designed to improve our appearance, worries about bodily flaws are often brushed aside or not taken seriously.

INSIDER spoke with two psychologists and a psychotherapist, and they explained some of the telltale signs that somebody has body dysmorphia, because it's so much deeper than putting a filter on your selfies or wishing you were a few pounds thinner.

FOLLOW US: INSIDER is on Facebook

1. You're preoccupied with one or more body parts, frequently honing in on any perceived "flaws" you believe you have.

Most of us have things about our appearance we wish we could wave a magic wand and change, but someone struggling with body dysmorphia often thinks about these perceived imperfections to an obsessive degree.

Carla Korn, LMFT, a licensed psychotherapist, explained this further.

"If you're struggling with BDD, you might believe that a certain body part appears different in reality than it truly does.," Korn told INSIDER. "For example, you might believe your legs are larger than they really are and constantly be 'body checking' or touching that part of your body subconsciously to 'check' on its size. You might also find yourself constantly seeking out your reflection in the mirror or window to examine them."

2. You spend a lot of time thinking or worrying about your appearance.

These insecurities aren't just a fleeting thought that goes away ― in fact, they are often unending and invasive.

"Individuals with BDD spend so much time obsessing over their appearance, or the appearance of a specific aspect of their appearance that it interferes with their ability to function at work or school," Korn explained.

Licensed psychologist Dr. Ashley Hampton, PhD, agreed, noting that these thoughts become "all-consuming."

"At the level where this becomes a disorder, these thoughts and preoccupations about perceived flaws and appearance take over life, so you're looking at hours daily," she told INSIDER.

Even if you're not aware of it, BDD behaviors can impact so much of your life, distracting you from work, relationships, leisure activities, or pursuing your dreams.

3. Your perceived flaws weigh heavily on your self-esteem and how you think others feel about you.

If you have so much disdain for what you believe are your physical imperfections, you might think others around you focus on them, too.

"You might think that you can't possibly have friends who genuinely likely you or feel lovable at all with your perceived imperfection," Korn said. "You probably find yourself shying away from engaging with friends or pursuing intimate relationships."Dr. Marla Deibler, a clinical psychologist and the executive director of The Center for Emotional Health of Greater Philadelphia, agreed, adding that this self-perception leaves the sufferer "believing that they are unattractive, hideous, or even deformed. This impacts the way they interact or refrain from interacting with the social world."

Everything you need to know about yeast infections and sex

sex

  • Yeast infections are fairly common and some things can make you more likely to get them, including being sexually active.
  • Despite how common they are, there are still plenty of misconceptions surrounding this fungal infection.
  • When it comes to whether or not you should have sex while you have a yeast infection, experts' opinions vary.

A yeast infection is an incredibly common fungal infection — WebMD estimates that 75% of women will experience at least one yeast infection in their lifetime and 40% to 45% will experience more than one.

A yeast infection is typically caused by a change in the vaginal pH levels, but not only individuals with vaginas get them.

"A yeast infection can occur on the skin and nails, in the mouth, on the vagina/vulva (known as vaginal candidiasis), and on the penis," said Dr. Kecia Gaither, double board-certified in OB-GYN and Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Director of Perinatal Services at NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln.

She also notes that common symptoms of a yeast infection include itching, redness, swelling, and burning.

Anyone can get a yeast infection — but certain health issues and activities can increase your risk

"Yeast infections tend to occur frequently in women whose immune systems may be impaired — from conditions like diabetes, pregnancy, and HIV — but also through antibiotic use, taking oral contraceptives and hormone therapies which increase estrogen levels," Dr. Gaither told INSIDER.

Dr. Alyssa Dweck, gynecologist and author of "The Complete A to Z for your V," told INSIDER that contraceptive rings, diaphragms, and sponges can also increase your risk for getting a yeast infection.

Additionally, yeast infections can also be caused by sitting in wet bathing suits or workout clothes for prolonged periods of time since moisture can cause the bacteria to develop.

Yeast infections can be passed through sexual activity, but it's not considered a sexually transmitted infection

bed beds sheet sexSexual activity itself doesn't actually cause a yeast infection, but it can increase your risk since it can alter your pH balance and allow yeast to take over, said Dr. Carolyn DeLucia, OB-GYN and advisor to Remedy Review.

Dr. Dweck told INSIDER that most healthy immune systems can fight off yeast infections despite exposure, but vaginal, oral, and anal sex as well as improperly cleaned sex toys can contribute to pH changes in one's body. Lubricants that contain glycerin can also increase one's risk for a yeast infection, but this is typically only the case if they are prone to yeast infections.

As for how long after sexual activity it would take for a yeast infection to develop, it can vary. Some notice symptoms immediately after sex while others may not feel major symptoms for a few days, said Dr. Dweck.

When it comes to whether or not you should have sex while you are treating a yeast infection, experts' opinions vary

couple kissing getty makeout romantic relationshipTreatment for yeast infections is generally pretty simple, but experts don't have a unanimous decision on whether or not you should abstain from sex while the infection resolves. Dr. Gaither said, with treatment, it usually takes one to two weeks for a yeast infection to resolve. During this time, she advises her patients to refrain from intercourse.

Dr. Dweck said that although having sex with an active yeast infection isn't necessarily dangerous, it could be uncomfortable or lead to a longer healing process.

"The intense vaginal itching and burning and inflammation of the tissues may make sex uncomfortable," said Dr.Dweck. "Thrusting could also cause further tissue inflammation, hindering the healing process. In addition, internal anti-yeast creams can leak out or be irritating to a partner during sex."

There's also a chance you could transmit it to your partner by exposure, especially if they have a vagina, said Dr. DeLucia. Although it's less common for those with penises to get yeast infections, they can also get them on the tip of their penis from having unprotected vaginal sex with someone who has a yeast infection. Dr. Gaither adds that individuals who aren't circumcised are at higher risk of this.

All in all, whether or not you opt to have intercourse while dealing with a yeast infection is up to you — but you may want to discuss it with your doctor and your partner first.

Being dehydrated can lower your libido and even make sex painful — here’s why

sex

  • When you're not adequately hydrated, your body might react in plenty of surprising ways that you might not think are related to how much water you're drinking.
  • Being dehydrated can impact your sex life — from headaches and fatigue preventing you from getting in the mood, to erectile issues and vaginal dryness.
  • Here are the signs you should look out for when it comes to your sex drive and water intake.

When you're not drinking enough water, your body can react in some seriously weird ways, including sleep disruption, headaches, and dry skin. But one of the most surprising signs of dehydration involves your sex life, because being dehydrated can have both physical and emotional effects on your bedroom routine.

From fatigue and irritability, which could secretly be killing your sex drive, to erectile issues and vaginal dryness, here are the ways that dehydration can affect your sex life, and how you can remedy the situation.

Not drinking enough water can cause a host of unpleasant physical and emotional symptoms that you might not immediately link to your fluid intake, such as fatigue and irritability to headaches. But how exactly does this impact your activity between the sheets?

A 2011 study in the British Journal of Nutrition found that even mild dehydration impairs cognitive performance and mood in young men, showing a marked increase in anxiety and tension even when at rest.

anxious man

This link exists with all genders, though, which makes sense. After all, how easy is it to get in the mood when you're feeling tense and anxious?

It turns out that drinking enough water and stress levels are actually closely linked. Our bodies need enough water to run efficiently, and when we don't have enough, that can impact just about everything from the inside out.

Registered dietitian Amanda Carlson told WebMD that "studies have shown that being just half a liter dehydrated can increase your cortisol levels," adding, "Cortisol is one of those stress hormones. Staying in a good hydrated status can keep your stress levels down. When you don't give your body the fluids it needs, you're putting stress on it, and it's going to respond to that."

Of course, drinking more water won't magically lower your stress levels, but it will help your body respond to outside stressors more seamlessly. And the less stressed you are, the more likely it is that you'll want to get it on.

If you've ever experienced a throbbing headache on a hot day or after a rigorous workout, or even just when you've failed to get in those six cups of water that day, you know firsthand how important it is to remain hydrated. And when your temples are pounding, you're probably not excited about the prospect of having sex.

laying in bed

"Often a headache is our body's signal that we're becoming dehydrated," explains Patricia Johnson, co-author of "Partners in Passion: A Guide to Great Sex, Emotional Intimacy and Long-term Love," who recommends drinking a tall glass of H2O and taking an over-the-counter pain reliever of your choice, and waiting it out a bit. As Johnson told SheKnows, "Chances are, your headache has vanished and you'll be able to focus on the pleasurable activities you're planning."

Dehydration can also cause dry skin, which can be the culprit for more than just chapped lips and itchiness. It turns out that if you're dehydrated, your vagina might be too.

Vaginal dryness can cause pain during sex, which probably won't make you excited about the thought of getting busy. But can not drinking enough water seriously dry out the skin down below?

Yes, says Sherry A. Ross, M.D., a women's health expert and author of "She-ology: The Definitive Guide to Women's Intimate Health. Period". Dr. Ross told Glamour magazine that "A healthy vagina needs the same hygienic attention as any other part of the body, similar to the way we care for our face," adding, "The skin of the vagina is susceptible to dryness if not taken care of properly."

couple having sex

That dryness can occur on the skin outside the vagina (the labia majora and labia minora) as well as the skin on the inside, and failing to drink enough water can lead to itchiness, burning, and pain down there … all of which can cause or exacerbate a yeast infection, says Dr. Ross.

The vagina has a delicate pH balance and a healthy vagina is normally acidic, but dehydration can send that balance out of whack, upping your risk for a yeast infection. "Yeast and bacterial infections occur when there is a disruption of the normal pH balance caused by dehydrated skin in and around the inside of the vagina," explains Dr. Ross.

Of course, it's worth mentioning that "more than drinking water will need to be done to keep the vagina healthy," explained Jessica Shepherd, M.D., an assistant professor of clinical obstetrics and gynecology and director of minimally invasive gynecology at The University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago. Dr. Shepherd told Glamour, though, that remaining adequately hydrated "does definitely improve the healthy state of the vagina."

Dehydration can also impact your ability to orgasm, as Johnson told SheKnows. She said, "Being sufficiently hydrated is important for female sexual response, in part because it may facilitate natural lubrication, and also because it can make it easier to experience orgasms."

The better hydrated we are, the more oxygen we have traveling through our bloodstream, helping things run smoothly all over the body. That also includes our sex organs, which need all that oxygen to help us climax more easily.

According to Healthline, there's a solid link between dehydration and erectile dysfunction as well, and it might surprise you. Just as our bodies need sufficient oxygen to run properly overall, they also need that oxygen to help get and maintain an erection, due to the need for adequate blood flow to those sex organs.

erectile dysfunction

In 2009, French researcher Simon N. Thornton looked at the link between erectile dysfunction and hydration levels, finding that blood volume impacts erectile function. When fluid levels fall, the body responds by releasing angiotensin, a hormone that can cause blood vessels to constrict or tighten, according to Healthline. This prevents blood flow throughout the body, which includes the penis.

There are tons of reasons why it's important to drink plenty of fluids even when you don't feel thirsty, but how much water is actually necessary to stay hydrated?

Of course, we've all heard the classic "eight glasses of water a day" rule, but there are so many variables, based on a person's overall health, climate, and activity level, to getting enough H2O. A good rule of thumb to follow is that if you're feeling thirsty, you might already be already experiencing dehydration, so drinking enough water throughout the day is never a bad idea, even if you're not particularly thirsty.

Plus, alcohol, caffeine, and salty foods are all dehydrating, so you'll want to increase water intake alongside these foods and drinks. And if you're exercising heavily, feeling ill, or in hot and humid weather, you'll definitely want to guzzle enough water accordingly.

alcoholic drinksPaying attention to your body's hydration can benefit you in more ways than you'd think, so drink up as often as you can.

14 unexpected health benefits of orgasms

sex

Though an orgasm isn't necessary for sex and masturbation to feel pleasurable, few will deny that reaching the big 'O' is a great added bonus.

But beyond just feeling great, an orgasm also brings with it a host of unexpected health benefits, many of which you likely had no idea about.

Whether you're climaxing with a partner or during a solo session, orgasms help with all kinds of things, from lowering stress levels and heart attack risk to giving your skin a natural glow.

INSIDER spoke with Dr, Damian Jacob Sendler, chief of division of clinical research at Felnett Health, and Dr. Felice Gersh, M.D., an OB-GYN and founder/director of the Integrative Medical Group of Irvine in Irvine, CA and author of the upcoming "PCOS SOS: A Gynecologist's Lifeline To Naturally Restore Your Rhythms, Hormones and Happiness," to learn the mental and physical health benefits of orgasms.

You'll probably enjoy a solid night's sleep.

If you've ever drifted peacefully off to sleep after an orgasm, you've experienced this powerful benefit firsthand. When we climax, a flood of hormones are sent to our brains, and it's those hormones that might help combat sleepless nights.

"Orgasm largely causes muscle relaxation as well as the release of chemicals that tell the body to rest," Dr. Sendler said. One hormone in particular, oxytocin, is to thank for that blissful feeling. As Dr. Gersh told INSIDER, "Orgasms trigger the release of the hormone oxytocin, which has been shown to promote a sense of tranquility and peace and therefore to foster sleep."

That giddy spring in your step post-orgasm is real.

This one might not much of a surprise, but that joyful, relaxed post-orgasm feeling works wonders for your overall mental health and happiness. "Orgasms require our body to function at the highest level of arousal," said Dr. Sendler, with Dr. Gersh giving credit to that release of oxytocin.

"Once more, that fabulous oxytocin is a marvelous boost to mood. Nature wants reproduction to occur and so makes the feelings associated with it pleasurable ones."

You'll feel closer not only to your partner, but with others in your social orbit as well.

If you've ever felt that telltale desire to snuggle up next to your partner after reaching orgasm, you can also thank oxytocin for those loved-up feelings. But it turns out that this powerful hormone can help you feel closer with others in your social circle too, not just your sexual partners.

According to a 2012 study by evolutionary psychologists at the University of Michigan and Albright College in Pennsylvania, "the more one's partner was likely to fall asleep after sex, the stronger the desire for bonding," said Daniel Kruger, research fellow at the University of Michigan, and lead author of the study.

"Oxytocin plays several roles involving mood. Since successful reproduction requires peaceful cooperation among family members, touching and hugging increases oxytocin, as does breastfeeding and having orgasms," explained Dr. Gersh, adding that "whichever way it is stimulated and produced, it increases the feeling of love and bonding."

In 2013, researchers Mark Ellenbogen and Christopher Cardoso looked at the effects of oxytocin on your social orbit outside the bedroom and found that "instead of the traditional 'fight or flight' response to social conflict where people get revved up to respond to a challenge or run away from it, oxytocin may promote the 'tend and befriend' response where people reach out to others for support after a stressful event. That can, in turn, strengthen social bonds and may be a healthier way to cope."

14 celebrities who have opened up about battling Lyme disease

kelly osbourneIn recent years, the medical spotlight has increasingly been shining on Lyme disease, the bacterial tick-borne illness that often comes with a host of vague, mysterious symptoms.

The widespread illness is often considered the "great imitator" because its symptoms typically mimic other health conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple sclerosis, and others.

Getting a proper Lyme disease diagnosis remains challenging because testing is often inconclusive, potentially leaving those impacted to suffer for weeks, months, or years before being correctly treated. Although treatments do exist, there is no cure.

Here are 14 celebrities who have spoken out about their experiences with Lyme disease, helping to shed light on this mysterious tick-borne illness.

Avril Lavigne went public with her Lyme battle in 2015 and is now an advocate for those with the illness.

Lavigne opened up about her struggle with Lyme disease in a June 2015 interview with "Good Morning America," revealing that she'd been bedridden in October 2014. She called that the "worst time" in her life after seeing specialists and doctors who misdiagnosed her with chronic fatigue syndrome and depression.

In October 2018, the "Complicated" singer told Billboard she felt unwell during her 2014 tour. She recalled thinking, "I'm achy, I'm fatigued, I cannot get the f--- out of bed — what the f--- is wrong with me?" as her symptoms progressively got worse.

During one of her darkest days battling with side effects of the disease, Lavigne said she wrote her 2018 song "Head Above Water," telling Billboard, "I had accepted that I was dying ... And literally under my breath, I was like, ‘God, help me keep my head above the water.'"

Lavigne has also started the Avril Lavigne Foundation, which aims to bring awareness to those dealing with Lyme and other serious illnesses and disabilities.

She told "GMA" viewers that might be suffering, "There is hope. Lyme disease does exist and you can get better."

Ben Stiller also had trouble getting an accurate diagnosis.

In 2011, Stiller told The Hollywood Reporter about his Lyme disease saying, "I got it in Nantucket, Massachusetts, a couple of years ago. My knee became inflamed and they couldn't figure out what it was, then they found out it was Lyme."

He says he's now symptom-free but notes that Lyme will never leave his system.

Shania Twain says her battle with Lyme has impacted her career.

Twain dominated the pop and country charts in the 1990s and early 2000s, but by 2004, she'd contracted Lyme disease, which she attributes to issues with her vocal cords.

In 2017, she told Canadian news outlet CBC that she was bitten by a tick when on tour in Norfolk, Virginia. She said she saw a tick fall of her and she immediately began to see troubling Lyme disease symptoms pop up.

"I was on tour, so I almost fell off the stage every night. I was very, very dizzy and didn't know what was going on. It's just one of those things you don't suspect," she added.

It took Twain years to figure out that she had dysphonia, a neurological disorder of the vocal cords in which muscles can spasm and impact speech, which she attributes to the Lyme bacteria.

She now warns others about the disease.

"[Lyme] is very dangerous because you have a very short window to catch it and then treat it and then even when you treat it, you could still very well be left with effects, which is what happened to me," Twain told CBC. "It's a debilitating disease and extremely dangerous. You can't play around with it, so you've got to check yourself for ticks."

In 2017, she prepared for a musical comeback and began advocating on behalf of fellow individuals with Lyme disease, telling E! News it's "such a silent evil thing."
